Times include about 10% for protocol overhead. Real speeds vary with Wi-Fi quality and how busy your network is.
Why is my upload slower than my internet speed?
Most home connections sell a fast download speed and a much slower upload speed. The number to use here is the upload figure from a speed test, not the one in your internet plan. Wi-Fi, other devices on your network and VPNs can slow it down further.
Mbit/s or MB/s?
Internet plans are quoted in megabits per second (Mbit/s). File sizes use megabytes (MB). There are 8 bits in a byte, so 100 Mbit/s is at best 12.5 MB/s. The calculator converts for you.
Tips for large uploads
Use a cable instead of Wi-Fi, keep the computer awake until the upload finishes, and choose a service that uploads in parallel chunks and retries on its own, so one dropped connection does not restart the whole file.
